Day 30 - Augsburg to Ulm
I awoke at about 5.00m and although there were a few clouds the day seemed to be fine.
Chris was already awake doing his stretches and Steve was still asleep…. Funny Steve is normally awake when we both are!
When he did wake he said he had had a stomach wog and was feeling unwell and as the time went on to breakfast he felt worse. After breakfast we agreed that we should find either a chemist or a doctor to get an assessment of Steve’s condition. We made our way to the hospital and were able to get into a medical clinic to sort out the problem which was some sort of gastric bug.
We agreed that we should find our way to Ulm by train rather than ride and as the train was due to leave at 12.22 Chris and I left Steve in our hostel to have a rest until check out time at 11.00 am and had a coffee and cake.
Arriving back at the hostel Steve was feeling a bit better after the rest and the medication and we made our way to the Augsburg station.
The train trip was interesting in that we ( I ) purchased tickets with help from the train station staff and on boarding the train the conductor said we had the wrong tickets …. Quite confusing given we were on the train to Ulm! Anyway common sense prevailed and we were able to continue to our destination but with a firm warning not to do it again!
We arrived at Ulm at about 2.00 pm with dark clubs a few drops of rain. The walk to our accommodation was only a few hundred metres. The accommodation has no separate storage for bikes so we removed the front wheels and locked them up outside the building and transported our bags up the the apartment. The focus was getting Steve into the apartment for a rest!
Chris and I made a short journey to Subway to get some lunch while Steve had a sleep.
After about an hour and a half Chris and I returned to the apartment to plan for the next few days of our journey and Steve was feeling far better thankfully!
After doing our planning it seems that the options for tomorrow are for Chris and I to ride on to Ruetlinger and leave Steve to catch the train or if Steve is up to it, all 3 of us do the ride…. All good to have options!
The day was another one where there was a “curve ball” thrown our way but we responded well and hopefully Steve’s condition improves soon.
I want to place on the record the great way the hospital system worked at Augsburg. The medical staff were great to deal with and spoke very good English. I was with Steve as his helper during the medical meeting and I could not have been more impressed.
The other interesting observation is that it seems booking.com who we use to do all our accomodation reservations seems to have a plot against us…. We are being booked in accomodation which is in top floors with no lifts! A real pain particularly after a long day of riding.
