Day 29-Munich to Augsburg

After a good night of sleep we were awake at 5.00 am looking out the window where it was an almost cloudless sky but cool temperatures around 12 degrees.

We were packed and ready to leave at around 6.00am and we thought that the day might warm up so better to get “on the road “ early.

Shortly after leaving we spotted the cafe where we had breakfast yesterday, so we had breakfast there again today. It was 2 croissants washed down with a cappuccino for me and we were on our way again….. until!!! Oh no Steve broke another spoke in his back wheel and it was looking the worst for wear!

So we stopped and looked for bike stores….we located a couple and made our way to the first and it didn’t open until 10.00 am and is this was now about 7.45 we “camped “ in a lovely cafe right near the Nymphenburg Palace and had a coffee to wait until 9.00am for the opening of the second shop. As we sat down a young lady soon a table nearby heard us speaking and recognised our accent and we had a lovely chat. Sarah was her name and she is a surfer and spent time in Sydney with her then boyfriend who was also a surfer. It was great to have a chat with her.

After this Cris and I left Steve to make his way to the second bike shop whilst we road down to the Nymphenburg Palace for a look… a very impressive building complex that was built over a number of centuries beginning with the 16th century.

After this we were advised by Steve that the bike repair would have a 2 week wait to be fixed…. No good for us so we thought that the best option was to find a Decathlon store to get the wheel sorted. Chris found a store nearby the route we were taking out of Munich so we were off again…. Steve’s bike was ok for short rides thankfully.

We arrived the Decathlon store and they were most helpful. They agreed to replace the whole rear wheel which I think was the best option after breaking now 7 spokes on the trip! The fix was estimated to take about an hour or so so we “ camped” outside the store then ago it was best to have an early lunch ahead of getting on our way again. We all had a lovely chicken and avocado salad which was quite tasty and filling. By this time the bike was ready and Steve was relieved his back wheel was now straight!

As an aside, we noticed a lot of soccer supporters near where we had lunch and it seems that the Euro 2024 matches are in Munich and Spain is playing France this evening.

At about midday we were on the road again to complete the remaining 54 kms of the ride to Augsburg. The weather was now quite warm but not too hot and the route was on undulating country roads and cycling paths. Also we had a slight tailwind to help us on our way. The plan was to get to Augsburg as soon as we could but not flog ourselves. I led the ride and we made good time getting to Augsburg at 4.15 pm. There were very few stops along the way!

The only real stop was a lovely lake which you will see in the pictures. After taking the picture Steve pointed out the fact there were a few topless ladies sunning themselves!!! We quickly got out of there!

Tonight we are staying a nice Pension which is very comfortable. I had a trip after arriving at Augsburg on the way to get a cool drink.. I tripped over a bike that fell across the path… all good with a couple of small scratches on my knees.

Today was “ an interesting day “ with more to add to the adventure side of the trip. I think Steve is now happy his bike has a new wheel and we are all happy to be in Augsburg which is a very large city.
