Day 21-Travel by Train to Jugenberg

As I mentioned in my last post, today we are relocating to Judenberg too start the next leg of our journey through to Strasburg. This is a stage of about 800 kms which will take 10 days to complete. A fair portion of this leg will encompass following the route of the prisoner of war march of a friend of Chris’s during the Second World War.

The day started with an early rise at 5.30am to pack and get to the train station for the start of the train journey.

The first train took us to Lienz through the lower alps in Italy then on to Austria. It was quite mountainous as we made our way towards the Brenner Pass but we turned away from it as we made our way to Austria.

Along the way we made many stops at stations many of which were at the base of skiing resorts. There is quite a lot a ski infrastructure with lifts and cable cars we could see from the train.

We arrived at Lienz with sunny weather but cooler conditions…. In the mid teens.

After getting off the train Steve purchased the tickets for the next leg of the trip to Judenburg. Unfortunately the train was to leave at 5.30 pm and we had about a 7 hour wait. Not to be deterred we found a by lovely cafe to have lunch and several coffees. As we had lunch it started to rain and as time went on it increased…. Great we were not on the bikes!

After waiting we made our way to the station to pick up some dinner to have on the train journey. I ordered a ham roll and apple juice.

Boarding the train we are able to complete a number of tasks including getting the “books” sorted and sorting out the journey in detail for the next couple of days.

Sitting on the train now, we expect to have a train change soon and arrive at our destination at about 9.00 pm. So it will be a long day for us. The ride to our accommodation is a short ride of a few kms so it should be fine.

The photos today are:

Breakfast at Bolzano station… bright eyed and bushy tailed!

Some photos from the train of the country 2 of them.
