Day 16- Lecco to Morbegno

Today was one “out of the box”

The day started at the usual wake up time of 6.00am and we were packed and left the apartment by 7.00 am. Breakfast was scheduled to be down in the town by Lake Como and after a little time we found a lovely cafe for croissants and coffee. At breakfast we planned the day’s events which included a trip on Lake Como if we could get tickets.

After breakfast we found the ticket office which was closed so agreed we would meet back there well before the first ferry and as there were things to do individually we went off. I had to sort out my hearing aids, one of which was not working. Unfortunately they were unable to help as the hearing aid is faulty and needs to be returned for repair…. It will have wait until I return home…

Returning to the ticket office we allocated Steve as the “ ferry master” to organise tickets boarding times and the like and I must say he did a great job!

The first ferry ride was to Bellagio where we were required to offload to purchase tickets for the remainder of the journey to Colico.

The trip on the ferry was a real experience with the sights from the lake being something out of this world. I took many pictures of the journey most of which do not do justice to the real experience. The ferry stops were at delightful little towns on the lake shores and above them on the mountains were towns perched on the side of the hill. Quite magnificent!

The stop at Bellagio was interesting as there were many, many tourists all looking at the sights. I think they were hoping to see George Clooney or some of the beautiful people! It looks a lovely place but the hoards of tourists put me off a bit. I think if I were to come back here I would try some of the lesser known locations we stopped at on the ferry ride.

I must say the ferry system seems to work well and was well patronised.

Our final stop off point was Colico which is at the northern end of the lake. It is a pretty village. We had lunch in an outdoor cafe overlooking the lake. The warmth of the sun made it very pleasant indeed!

Lunch for me was a toasted ham and sandwich and an orange juice ( freshly squeezed)

After our late lunch at about 3.00 pm it was off for the final 20+ kms to our final destination being Morbegno. The ride was essentially along a paved cycle way which goes all the way to Bormio which is tomorrow’s destination.

We arrived at the accommodation apartment be greeted by the owner’s parents and a friend who welcomed us with open arms…. Gee the Italian people are wonderful! The “friend” who was part of the greeting party was from Australia and is living and working here. He has married an Italian lady and has children who are being raised here.

The weather today was delightfully in the low mid twenties and there was virtually no rain. The sun was shining most of the afternoon.

Looking at the route we travelled about 84 kms of which about 60 were on the ferry. We climbed about 150 metres of which most was up to our accommodation in Morbegno. Morbegno seems to be another cute town which just happens to be one of our stopping points along the way! So far we have not failed to get a town that is a fail so far as its wonderful charm and history is concerned.

Another great day of adventure biking.

The pictures today are:

Breakfast ahead of the ferry trip

5 pictures on the ferry… as I said earlier this does poor justice to the live experience
